Made in India Watches: Which Brands Actually Manufacture Here?

“Made in India” means very different things across the watch scene — from designed-here to fully manufactured. Here's the honest, brand-by-brand breakdown.

Not all “made in India” watches are made in India to the same degree. Some brands manufacture cases and dials here (Jaipur Watch Company, Sylvi, Olavu, Majestic Craftsmen); most assemble here with imported movements (Delhi and Bangalore Watch Company); some are simply designed in India. Here's the honest three-tier breakdown.

"Made in India" is the most-used and least-precise phrase in Indian watchmaking. It can mean a watch whose case and dial are genuinely manufactured in India, or one that is merely assembled here from imported parts, or one that is only designed in India and built abroad. All three get marketed as "Indian." Here is the honest breakdown of what the label actually means — and which brands sit in each tier.

First, the movement truth

One caveat frames everything below: almost no "made in India" watch has an Indian-made movement. The mechanical or quartz heart is nearly always Japanese (Seiko NH35, Miyota) or Swiss (Sellita) — because India has had essentially no volume movement manufacturing since HMT wound down. So when brands compete on "made in India," they are competing on everything except the movement: the case, dial, hands, finishing and assembly. That is where the real differences lie.

Manufactured in India (the deepest tier)

These brands make more than they buy. Jaipur Watch Company (2013) fabricates cases and sets certified antique coins and hand-painted Pichwai dials in-house. Sylvi (Surat, 2015) and Olavu (Bengaluru, 2023) manufacture at scale in India, and Majestic Craftsmen (2022) markets itself explicitly on "Designed, Manufactured and Assembled in India." This is as close to a truly Indian watch as the market currently gets — movement aside.

Assembled in India (the mainstream)

This is where most of the brands you know sit, and it is no criticism — it is the global micro-brand norm. Delhi Watch Company and Bangalore Watch Company, the two biggest names, both assemble in India with imported Seiko and Swiss Sellita movements respectively. Ajwain, Horpa, Argos, Rotoris, Shaw and Kala follow the same model: Indian design and assembly, imported mechanical hearts.

Designed in India

The lightest-touch tier: the concept, dial art and branding are Indian, but the physical watch is largely produced and assembled overseas. Coromandel, AIQON, Pyko, Avarth and the new Ahmedabad Watch Company sit here. It is the fastest way to launch a brand, and the design can still be deeply Indian — but it is honest to call it designed rather than made in India.

So how "Indian" should you care about?

If provenance matters most to you, look to the Manufactured tier. If you care about design, story and value, the Assembled tier gives you the country's best-loved watches. And if a dial simply speaks to you, the Designed tier still counts — just know what you're buying. Ghadicode labels every brand's level on its Made in India page so you can decide for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Are any watches fully made in India, including the movement?

Effectively no. India has no volume movement manufacturing since HMT, so even "manufactured in India" brands import the Japanese or Swiss movement. What is made in India is the case, dial, hands, finishing and assembly.

Which Indian watch brands manufacture the most in India?

Jaipur Watch Company, Sylvi, Olavu and Majestic Craftsmen do the deepest in-India manufacturing of cases and dials. Most other brands assemble in India with imported components.

Is an "assembled in India" watch still an Indian watch?

Yes — assembly, design and quality control in India is the global micro-brand standard, and includes India's most respected names like Delhi and Bangalore Watch Company. It simply isn't the same as full manufacture.
