The Varnam Collection
"Varnam" in Carnatic music is a compositional form that introduces a raga — the foundational framework from which a full performance grows. Coromandel's Varnam watches introduced their aesthetic framework: vibrant pigments borrowed from Tanjore painting tradition, geometric arrangements that reference South Indian textile patterns, colors that have no equivalent in Swiss watchmaking's typically muted palette.
The Saffron edition references the traditional manjalpai — the turmeric yellow that appears throughout South Indian ceremony and textile. The Indigo edition references the Neel dye tradition that once made India the world's primary source of blue pigment. Both sold out within days of release.
The Blue Mountain Edition
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway has been pulling trains up to Ooty since 1908, using a rack-and-pinion system designed for a maximum gradient of 8.33%. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site — one of three mountain railways of India, alongside the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway.
The Blue Mountain Edition captures the misty blue-green palette of the Nilgiris at altitude — the particular color of the Western Ghats in monsoon season, seen from inside a train carriage climbing toward Ooty. It is less representation and more memory.
The Tanjore Edition
Thanjavur (Tanjore) painting is one of South India's most demanding art forms: 22-karat gold foil applied over a chalk-and-glue ground, with precious stones pressed into the composition and vivid mineral pigments painted over the result. It emerged from the court of the Thanjavur Nayaks in the 16th century and has been executed by specialists ever since.
On the Coromandel Tanjore dial, the same visual language — gold, jewel-brightness, complex layering — is achieved through contemporary printing and finishing processes. The result references one of South India's most enduring artistic traditions in a format that can travel to London, Dubai, or New York on someone's wrist.
What It Means
Before Coromandel, Indian watch brands that drew on cultural heritage were predominantly drawing on North Indian and Mughal references — Delhi, Jaipur, Rajasthan, the Mughal court. South India's extraordinary artistic traditions — Tanjore painting, Kalamkari, Carnatic music's visual analogies, the Nilgiris landscape — were almost entirely absent from the watch world.
