Padigam: The Chennai Watch Brand That Tells Time in Classical Tamil Numerals

Formerly Madras Watch Company, Padigam puts the old Tamil numeral system, where ten has its own sign, on a ₹2,799 watch. All five models have sold out. Here's why, and where it fits in India's move to local-script dials.

Padigam is a Chennai watch brand, formerly Madras Watch Company, whose dials replace every hour marker with a classical Tamil numeral: ten is its own sign (௰), so twelve reads ௰௨. Five models (Pagal, Iravu, Mathi, Sudar and Thulir) share a 40mm steel case, Epson day-date quartz and a ₹2,799 price, and all have sold out. Here is how the numerals work and how Padigam compares with other Indian-script watches.

"Why should time always be read in numbers that don't belong to us?" That question is how Padigam explains itself. The Chennai brand, which says on its Instagram that it was formerly Madras Watch Company, "Born out of Madras, Made in India, Made for India", answers it plainly: every hour marker on the dial is a Tamil numeral.

Plenty of Indian brands put an Indian script on a dial. What makes Padigam different is which Tamil numerals it uses, and what it charges for them.

The numerals: why twelve is ௰௨

Modern Tamil writing mostly uses the same 0–9 digits as English. But Tamil has its own older number system, and it doesn't work like ours. It is not positional: instead of writing 10 as "1" followed by "0", it gives ten its own sign, ௰, just as it has signs for a hundred (௱) and a thousand (௲). Eleven is ten-and-one, ௰௧. Twelve is ten-and-two, ௰௨.

Padigam's dials follow this older system faithfully: ௧ at one o'clock, ௨ at two, round to ௰ at ten, ௰௧ at eleven and ௰௨ at twelve. A reader expecting modern-style "௧௨" at twelve will notice the difference. It is a small typographic choice that shows the brand has done its homework.

The five watches

The launch pair came in April 2026: Pagal (day), a white dial with blue numerals in a steel case, and Iravu (night), white numerals on black in a black case. In September three more arrived for the moments in between: Mathi (moonlight), Sudar (the first ray of sun) and Thulir (the first green shoot after monsoon rain).

All five share a spec: a 40mm SS304 steel case with 20mm lugs, hardened mineral crystal, a laser-engraved solid caseback, 30m water resistance, a composite leather strap and a Seiko Epson quartz movement with day and date. Every one is ₹2,799 including shipping, with an optional three-year extended warranty for ₹299. All five are currently sold out.

Is it any good?

Judge it for what it is. A mineral crystal and 30m of water resistance make this a daily watch to keep off the beach and out of the pool, and the day-date window is written in English, which slightly undercuts the Tamil theme. But the case is steel, the movement is from a proper Japanese maker, and the dial is original. That is more than most ₹3,000 watches in India offer. Only a handful of watches in our catalogue cost less, and almost none of them has a dial you can't find elsewhere.

Where it fits: India's move to local scripts

Padigam is part of a clear trend of Indian brands putting their own scripts on the dial:

  • Devanagari: Delhi Watch Company's Devanagari Chrono, and IST 1947's custom Devanagari-inspired numerals on the Arka.
  • Kannada: Deccan Watches' sold-out Dodda Gadiyara, which copies the numerals of Mysuru's clock tower.
  • State scripts: IST 1947's Vanya field watches put a regional numeral at twelve, such as the Assamese one on the Vanya Kaziranga.
  • Tamil: Padigam, with the classical system at every hour.

The others mostly treat script as an accent. Padigam makes it the whole dial, at a price that turns it from a collector's piece into something a Chennai college student can buy. That goes a long way to explaining why all five sold out.

How to buy one

There's nothing to buy right now. Every Padigam is sold out on padigam.com. New drops have been announced on the brand's Instagram, @padigamwatches, so that is the place to watch. If you want an Indian-script dial you can buy today, IST 1947's Arka and Vanya are in our under-₹10,000 guide.
